Faculty Summer Institute

The first Faculty Summer Institute was held in June 2009, and was part of a larger project called Expanding Cultural Awareness of Exceptional Learners at UO (Project ExCEL – UO), a federally funded grant that is a collaborative effort of faculty in Special Education and the Disability Services office. Project ExCEL-UO seeks to improve the experiences of students with disabilities at the University of Oregon by providing all faculty members with additional information and training related to understanding and teaching students with disabilities. The ExCEL model includes three interrelated training components that together are designed to impact the overall culture of the university in ways that make it more responsive to the needs of students with disabilities.

The first component is a Train-the-Trainer model of faculty development that is meant to maximize the impact of the project. Thirty-nine faculty members representing the eight UO colleges attended the Summer Institute. These faculty members will now act as liaisons in bringing the information from the Summer Institute back to their departments in an effort to change the UO campus climate so that it is more sensitive to the needs of students with disabilities.

There will be two more Faculty Summer Institute workshops in June 2010 and June 2011. If you are a faculty member interested in participating in future Summer Institutes, please contact Allison Lombardi: allisonl@uoregon.edu

The second and third components of Project ExCEL-UO include campus-wide distribution of Disability Services News, a newsletter intended to increase disablity awareness among faculty and staff, and the reorganization of the Disability Services website so that a faculty resources section is included. Both of these components are ongoing within the next two years. Issues of Newsletters are sent out to all faculty and staff via email. Issues are available at the following links as online .pdfs.
