Most Commonly Asked Questions

  • Can I receive tutoring through Disability Services?
  • Disability Services does not offer tutoring. Academic Learning Services (ALS) coordinates a math and writing lab and provides referrals for individual tutoring. In most cases of individual tutoring, arrangements are made directly by the student with the tutor for meeting times and fees. If tutoring is being paid for by an outside agency, DS can help facilitate paperwork and tutor payment. For more information go to: Academic Learning Services. Specialized tutoring is also available privately in the Eugene area.

  • Accessible parking: What is available on campus and how do I get a permit?
  • If you park on campus on a regular basis, you will need to purchase a student parking permit. If you have a DMV disabled permit and feel you need a reserved space, request forms are available from the Office of Public Safety, located in Straub Hall. Temporary permits can also be issued if a reserved space is needed for a short period of time. The blue parking spaces are for campus visitors and those who infrequently need to park in a certain area and have a DMV placard. For more information go to: Department of Public Safety.

  • Does Disability Services offer any scholarships?
  • DS coordinates the application for the Pincetich Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded yearly to a legally blind student at the University of Oregon. As DS receives new scholarship information, we print it in our newsletter Able Access, and do special mailings as relevant. DS has a book, Financial Aid for the Disabled and Their Families, which describes how to apply for specific scholarships, grants, etc. and can be borrowed by students. Additional resources for financial aid information include the Career Center, the Office of Financial Aid, and the Financial Aid Information web page . These web sites contain the latest information on scholarships, fellowships, grants and much more. They also provide information specifically for students with disabilities.

  • If I attend an initial meeting with Disability Services, does this mean that I must use the services?
  • No. Our office encourages students to use whatever available resources are necessary to succeed in college. However, you are encouraged to meet with DS at the beginning of your college career. It will allow you to learn what DS offers. Establishing a file will make it easier to access services if you later decide assistance is needed.

  • What if I can’t attend the University of Oregon as a full-time student?
  • If a partial course load is necessary due to limitations related to a disability, you should discuss this with the Counselor for Students with Disabilities. DS can write a statement for University Housing, childcare services, etc., granting you full-time equivalency for eligibility requirements.

  • What if I need accommodations in housing or financial aid?
  • You will need to provide DS with all appropriate documentation and then make an appointment with DS to discuss your particular situation.

  • What if the elevator to my class breaks down?
  • Contact the Office of Public Safety at 346-5444. Explain that you cannot get to your class due to a malfunction in the elevator and you need immediate assistance. Contact DS if you want us to intervene with your instructor or need other assistance.
